A buffer overflow vulnerability in the Brotli decoder (c/dec/decode.c) in Google Brotli versions 1.0.3 through 1.2.0 on all platforms allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to corrupt adjacent decoder state memory, disclose sensitive memory contents, cause a denial of service, or potentially execute arbitrary code using a crafted Brotli-compressed stream. Users need to update any Brotli libraries or binaries between 1.0.3 through 1.2.0 to the latest available version: 1.0.10 or 1.1.1 or 1.2.1. This is a high threat mapped to CVE-2026-111497; security leaders should validate exposure, prioritize patching, and verify compensating controls.

SecOps Recommended Triage Checklist

  • 01.Scope & Asset Discovery: Query vulnerability scanners (e.g. Tenable) and software bill of materials (SBOM) to pinpoint affected packages and services.
  • 02.Vendor Patch Application: Prioritize deployment of official security patches released by upstream vendors.
  • 03.Compensating Defense Controls: If patch cannot be applied immediately, enforce strict firewall/WAF boundaries and isolate target instances.
  • 04.Endpoint Behavioral Monitoring: Audit telemetry via EDR (e.g. CrowdStrike) for abnormal child processes or privilege escalation attempts.
